The University will not be distributing Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funds for the Spring of 2022.

According to Tammy Mitchum, associate director of the financial aid and scholarship office, the disbursements started Fall 2020 with the most recent distribution in Fall 2021.

"SFA does not anticipate receiving additional funds this spring term,” Mitchum said.

In March 2020, the United States Congress passed, the CARES Act. The CARES Act is federal funding that provides emergency grant funds for students who are struggling financially due to COVID-19.

The University allocated $10.4 million from the CARES Act. A portion of $5.2 million of the funds went to emergency financial aid grants. The emergency financial aid grants were distributed to over 4,000 students.

Junior mass communication major Jailyn Bolden said the CARES Act was “impactful” for her throughout the pandemic and that the financial aid office has been a great resource for her and many other students throughout her experience at the University.

According to the U.S Department of Education, “[The] CARES Act requires institutions to use no less than 50% of HEERF funds received under Sections 18004(a)(1) and 18004(c) of the CARES Act.”

Although COVID-19 funds will not be applied for the spring semester, the financial aid office offers other resources for financial aid assistance. If you have any questions regarding financial aid, the Financial Aid Office can be found in the Austin building, or you can call 936-468-1048.
